How Community Organizations Can Help
We love sharing our message of hope with schools, temples, churches, synagogues, Boys and Girls Clubs, scouting organizations, professional associations and philanthropic groups. Your class, team or congregation can host a bake sale, car wash, dog wash, silent auction, antiques sale, block part, poetry slam, dance off-- you name it, to benefit Gracie’s Giving Hands. Please call us to brainstorm!
We also work with community organizations to distribute food, clothing, water and even books and Christmas gifts for kids. Please contact us to discuss how we may partner with your group to organize a community food and supplies distribution.
How Professionals and Organizations Can Help
Our mission is to serve those in need, who live at or below the poverty line in Los Angeles. This includes low-earning individuals and economically depressed families who struggle to maintain a minimum standard of security and stability, as well as thousands of unhoused people on the streets of Los Angeles.
Most of the people we serve do not receive adequate medical care, and many are underinsured or uninsured. With this in mind, professionals of many kinds are urgently needed on Skid Row and elsewhere. Here are some examples of professional services we hope to offer our communities in need. We especially appreciate professional teams with fluency in multiple languages (Spanish, Vietnamese, Mandarin).
ADDICTION SPECIALISTS: Substance abuse is a reality of life on the streets. Skilled intervention and licensed professional counseling are always urgently needed, along with referrals to available support programs and facilities.
DENTISTRY: Mobile licensed dental professionals who can X-ray, examine and clean teeth, treat minor inflammation and infections, and diagnose more serious dental issues. Distribute toothbrushes and toothpaste to our communities in need.
FAMILY PLANNING, STD PREVENTION: Provide information regarding sexually transmitted conditions, risk factors, free testing, and condom distribution.
GYNECOLOGY: While life on the street is traumatic for all, women and girls are especially at risk for injury and assault, and women’s health issues are often overlooked. Licensed health workers who are qualified to examine women and address reproductive health needs, refer women needing treatment to available care.
LEGAL PROFESSIONALS: Many of the individuals we serve need legal advice for issues ranging from overdue parking tickets to immigration and visa violations. Access to information regarding how to resolve common challenges would be a critically valuable first step for our communities.
MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS: Life on the streets is rough, and physical injuries are common. Many individuals suffer from untreated conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure. Others may simply experience blistered feet and sunburn from chronic exposure to the elements. Mobile licensed professionals who can examine individuals and discuss their health concerns, as well as supply basics like wound-cleansing wash, band-aids, antiseptic ointment or spray, sunblock. Eye exams and hearing exams are needed, along with referrals for professional care.
MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS: Mental illness is commonplace among unhoused people and others living in compromised conditions. Skilled engagement and referrals for licensed care and treatment are always needed.
TEACHERS AND TUTORS, especially in English language proficiency, math, and basic computer skills.
How Corporations Can Help
Gracie’s Giving Hands is currently in search of grants, grant writers, angel investors and corporate sponsors and partners to help our sphere of influence grow. Our long-range plans include developing facilities for unhoused people, including cooling stations and transitional housing. We welcome the opportunity to meet with potential funders in regard to developing these and other philanthropic programs which offer significant tax benefits to corporations. Please contact us for more information.
